Day 2 - Interfaces and Cables Flashcards
Ethernet
A collection of network protocols/standards
Why are protocols/standards needed?
They create agreed upon standards in the industry so devices can communicate
What is a bit?
A binary value represented by either a one or a zero
The computer interprets bits to carry out tasks
How is speed measured in networks?
In bits per second (not bytes)
1 Kilobit
Kb
1000 bits
1 Megabit
Mb
1,000,000 bits
1 Gigabit

1,000,000,000 bits

Networking standards are defined by whom?
The IEEE
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair
Type of copper cable used for Ethernet cabling
Unshielded - twisted pairs within have no metallic shielding, thus vulnerable to electrical interferance
Twisted Pair - 4 pairs of twisted cables (helps reduce EMI between them)
Range of about 100 m
Emits a faint signal outside of the cable
10/100BASE-T pin arrangements
Pins 1 and 2 transmit data to the switch
Pints 3 and 6 receive data from the switch
Allows for full-duplex transmission
