Deck 1 Flashcards
What are the benefits of water as an extinguishing media
Dilutes gas Reduces heat Steam, drives out existing gasses Absorbs heat Absorbs latent heat Steam limits oxygen reaching the fire
What is a flashover
A sudden and sustained transition of a ground fire into a fully developed fire.
What is a backdraught
A Deflagration, caused by air being introduced to a fire compartment that is oxygen starved,
Has limited ventilation
And where there is a build up of unburnt fire gasses
What is fire gas ignition
A sudden Deflagration caused by the ignition of fire gasses that have accumulated outside the compartment
What are the external signs of backdraught
Fire with limited ventilation Fire has been burning for some time Fire gasses being pushed out through gaps under pressure Blackened windows with no visible flame Fire gasses pulsing through gaps
What are the internal signs of backdraught
Low neutral plane Darkening of fire gasses Inrush of air, fire gasses forced out Pulsation of gasses through the opening Deflagration through an opening
Carbon monoxide and hydrogen

4 emergency procedures available to wearers
Bodyguard DSU
Entrapment procedure
Mutually exchange air
Call for radio assistance
Why would you cut away
To investigate a fire, or locate and extinguish an innaccessible fire
IC’S Assessment of fire compartment must include
Size and layout
Location and access
Probable fire loading based on available information
Size of fire, fire development, growth and fire behaviour
