Repression
Forgetting the details of a really bad car accident
Denial
A child who is told that her parents are divorcing may deny that it is happening or deny that she is upset about it
Suppression
Fears are replaced by thinking of a happy place time or event
Projection
An angry person who thinks others are angry at him or her
Displacement
Involves taking out our frustration feelings and impulses on people or objects that are less. Having a bad day at school and taking it out on family
Reaction formation
Treating someone you really dislike in an excessively friendly manner
Regression
When confronted with stressful events people sometimes abandon coping
Fixation
People who bite finger nails or smoke or drink while under stress
Identification
Taking on characteristics of someone
Rationalizing
If a person says “I don’t care if I wasn’t chosen for the soccer team I didn’t really wanna play soccer anyways”
Isolation
Reading about grieving after patents death
Sublimation
Channeling aggressiveness into contact sports
Compensation
A young person who becomes physically disabled
And compensation by working hard academically and becomes a doctor
