Definitions Flashcards
Partial loss of voluntary motor function
Paresis
Lameness due to pain due to stretching/inflammation of nerve roots…
“Nerve root signs”
What is neuropraxia?
Result of a traumatic nerve injury, usually due to loss of blood supply, pressure from the weight of animal during anesthesia, tourniquets, etc.
No nerve degeneration, but myelin sheaths may degenerate
What is axonotmesis?
Degeneration of axons but the endoneurium and Schwann cells remain intact allowing regeneration of the axon and return of function. Usu. paresis and hypesthesia
What is neurotmesis?
Complete severance of a nerve and degeneration of the distal portion and its Schwann cells. Regeneration usually does NOT occur; usu anesthesia and paralysis
