ES - Gesture
A non-verbal action to communicate an idea, emotion, or expression. Gestures can also convey a character’s personality.
ES - Facial Expression
Most facial expressions convey meanings that are clearly understood by the audience. Meaning, mood and emotions are conveyed through facial expressions, amongst other skills.
ES - Movement
The actions and motions made by an actor during a performance. Movement describes the physicality of the actor to convey or symbolise a meaning.
ES - Voice
Different voices are needed for different contexts, emotions, and even types of theatre. Voice needs to be projected further in a bigger space, and less in smaller, private areas. Diction is also important: make sure you pronounce and enunciate.
DE - Sound
This can include pre-recorded sound as well as sound you produce yourself. It can also include the intentional absence of noise.
DE - Space
This refers mainly to the use of space. Where the actors are on the stage, how close they are to each other and other objects.
DE - Symbol
A symbol is something that indicates or stands for something else. It might be an object, a movement, a gesture, an item of clothing, a lighting effect etc.
DE - Tension
Similar to the feeling of suspense, tension is wanting to know what happens next. The audience needs to be involved in the play, physically or emotionally to feel tension.
DE - Rhythm
The rhythm in a play is similar to a piece of music. It is the timing and pace of a performance, and can also refer to the beat or tempo of the performance.
PS - Energy
Directly linked to the experience of reproducing and sustaining characters and key ideas of an audience. It comes from the actor embodying the character and action in a sustained manner.
PS - Timing
Includes the pace at which lines are delivered, the use of stillness and silence and pauses in the delivery of lines or actions and the variety of the delivery.
PS - Focus
Refers to how much the actor is paying attention to their performance, and also their gestures, movements, facials expression, lines etc.
PS - Actor-Audience Relationship
The feelings that come about between the actors and the audience, how it is developed and maintained. May change depending on each audience.
PT - Brainstorming
Creating ideas spontaneously in a short amount of time with or without other people. Usually conducted without self-censoring or unnecessary reflection.
PT - Researching
To find out, to search out or investigate particular concept or topic.
