Definitions - Bonding Flashcards
Element
Substance made form only one type of atom
Compound
Substance made from 2 or more types of atom chemically bonded together
Molecule
Particle made form two or more atoms chemically bonded together using a covalent bond
Ion
Electrically charged particle formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons from one or atom or group of atoms
Ionic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions (opposite charge)
Giant ionic lattice
Structure resulting from oppositely charged ions strongly attracted in all directions e.g NaCl
Metal and ionic, Giant
Always giants as they have no covalent bonds and aren’t molecules
Simple Vs Giant
Giant - Strong bonds holding structure together
Simple - weak intermolecular forces between molecules
Giant ionic lattice
- High melting point - strong electrostatic force of attraction between op charged ions = high energy needed to break
- Can conduct when molten/aqueous - Ions are free to move and carry charge
- Soluble in polar solvents e.g water
