Definitions of Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What is a divergent plate boundary?
(also known as constructive)
Low magnitude
Usually in the ocean
What is a convergent plate boundary?
(destructive)
Frequent volcanoes and Earthquakes
What is a conservative plate boundary?
(sliding against each other)
Shallow earthquakes
No volcanoes
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Plates move together
Form a subduction zone or continental Collision
If a subduction zone isn’t formed than the collision will form a large mountain range
Also cause many volcanoes to form, these volcanoes don’t erupt often but when they do its extremely destructive.
What is a divergent plate boundary?
Create rift volcanoes which are usually less explosive
Usually occur under water
What are hotspots?
Occur in the middle of plates due to high heat and low pressure and slowly move away from the plate boundary due to continental drift.
What are subduction zones?
When a heavier, more dense plate moves against a lighter less dense plate causing the smaller plate to sink.
If a Subduction zone doesn’t occur then a locked fault will form which builds up tons of pressure and when released causes a high magnitude earthquake.
