Density Flashcards
What is density?
- the ratio of mass to volume
* matter can be more or less dense by the amount of mass compared to volume
What happens to density when volume decreases?
The density will increase
What happens to density when mass increases?
The density increases
What happens when a substance has a higher density than the fluid it is in?
It will sink
What happens when a substance has a lower density than the fluid it is in?
It will float
What happens when a substance has the same density as the fluid it is in?
It will hover in place
What is an example of a fluid with a low density?
Oil, it sits on top of water
What is an example of a fluid with a high density?
Honey and mercury have high densities
How do you find density
You divide the mass by the volume. It is measured in grams/millilitres or grams/cm3. Millilitres = cm cubed
What is the particle theory of matter?
- Everything is made up of matter ( matter includes atoms and molecules)
- There is always space between atoms and molecules ( they never touch )
- Particles are always moving
- Particles are attracted to each other
What is archimedes principle?
How does it rationalize the ability of a boat to float?
What are some important formulas?
