Density And Kinetic Theory Flashcards

1
Q

What is density?

A

The mass of unit volume of a substance

Density = Mass / Volume
D = M / V

Measured in kg / m^3

Q

How are the molecules arranged in solids?

A

Molecules arranged very closely together. They vibrate about fixed positions. Solids have a fixed shape and volume, and a high density.

Q

How are the molecules arranged in liquids?

A

Molecules arranged close together, but not as close as solids. They can move around in any direction and are not fixed in position. Liquids have a fixed volume but take on the shape of the container.

Q

How are the molecules arranged in gases?

A

Molecules are very far apart with large distances between them. They move around very quickly in all directions. Gases have a low density and always completely fill their container
