Digestion Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A tissue produces movement
Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue covers surfaces to protect them (skin).
What are the plants 3 main organs?
- stem
- root
- leaves
The nervous system
This is made up of nerve cells (neurons) that carry electrical impulses around the body to coordinate responses.
The circulatory system
This is formed from the heart and blood vessels, in order to transport oxygen and nutrients to all of the body cells
The musculoskeletal system
This is the bones of the body and the muscles attached to them for movement
Glandular tissue
Glandular tissue secretes enzymes and hormones
The mouth
The mouth contains teeth to break up the food and glands to secrete amylase enzyme to breakdown starch
Were does most digestion occur?
Most digestion occurs in the small intestine. It is very long, and is also folded to increase its surface area to absorb the broken down food
The stomach
The stomach contains hydrochloric acid to destroy pathogens and secretes protease enzymes for the digestion of proteins
The gullet
The gullet or Oesophagus pushes the food down to the stomach
The liver
The liver secretes bile.
What does the pancreas and the gall bladder do?
The gall bladder and pancreas secrete more digestive juices and enzymes into the small intestine to break down the large molecules further.
The large intestine
The large intestine continues to absorb digested molecules such as water.
The rectum
The rectum followed by the anus allow any undigested matter to be egested.
