Digestive System Flashcards
Large Intestine
Left over food is squeezed to remove moisture and then carried out of the body as waste.
Small Intestine
This organ is about 20 feet long and breaks up food into such tiny pieces that the nutrients can pass through the lining of the walls to be carried to the blood.
Stomach
Food is mashed and churned with the help of digestive juices.
Esophagus
This stretchy tube moves food from the mouth to the stomach.
Liver
This organ creates bile which helps the stomach digest food.
Mouth
Large pieces of food are broken up into smaller pieces
Protein
Helps to build muscle. Examples: meat, beans, nuts.
Carbohydrates
This nutrient gives our body energy (bread, pasta, rice). There are two kinds. Simple carbs- quick burst of energy, and complex carbs- release slowly to make the energy last.
Fat
helps our brain and nervous system develop as babies. It also cushions our organs and helps to absorb nutrients.
Vitamins
Our bodies cannot make vitamins on their own so we must eat fruit and vegetables.
Minerals
These help to strengthen our bones and teeth. Examples: potassium, calcium
Water
Keeps our body at a normal temperature and keeps our organs hydrated
Fiber
This is not a nutrient but it is important because fiber helps to digest food and remove waste.
