Style: Formal in terms of sentences
Voice: Impersonal and polite
Journal entry
Purpose: Informative, to record a significant event
Structure: Chronological, describing the event as it unfolds
Style: Full sentences, paragraghed. Language is precise
Voice: As an objective witness but mixed with personal response
Speech
Purpose: Argumentative
Structure: Introduce the issue
Make a point
Conclude with an urgent warning of what will hapen
Style: Full range of rhetorical devices, strong vocabulary
Voice: Passionate and authorative
Interview
Purpose: Informative
Structure: Asks three questions and each is answered. Paragraphs not allowed
Style: Informal,using contradictions, range of vocabulary
Voice: Personality should be evident from their responses
Formal report
Purpose: Record of something witnessed
Structure: Chronological account of what was observed
Style: Formal, detailed,factual. Passive voice
Voice: Dispassionate and official
Finish: yours sincerely if you know the person
Finish: yours faithfully if you don’t know the person
Writing articles
- Title - make use of rhetorical questions
- Use direct address
- Use complex sentence structure
