Q

Why did Henry want to dissolve monasteries?

A

monks no longer behaved as they were supposed to do. They were expected to lead simple, religious lives, offering alms to the poor and shelter to those in need.

Monasteries owned over a quarter of all the cultivated land in England. By destroying the monastic system Henry could acquire all its wealth and property whilst removing its Papist influence.
