Q

” A m c g o t w h c i … a m’s g a u t s”

A

“A man can’t go out the way he came in … a man’s gotta add up to something”

Close-up shows Willy’s belief that a man must leave a legacy in order to be successful to fully fulfil the American Dream. If a man does not leave a destiny he has not achieved the American Dream

Q

“Y e u w m d t a”

A

“You end up worth more dead than alive.”

Mid Shot- the employed oxymoron Willy refers to how all the hard work and incredible amount of hours he’s put into trying to achieve his AD the insurance money his family will receive for his death is. Here, Willy verbally communicates the idea that he has been suggesting throughout the play; self-worth is measured in wealth.

Q

“D y k? … h d t d o a s, i h g s”

A

“Do you know? when he died … he died the death of a salesman, in his green velvet slippers”

Close up shot- After being rejected by Howard to give Willy a position in New York. Willy tells him an anecdote of a salesman he met named Dave Singleman. Which was the man who inspired him to become a salesman. This was because Daves’s death was respected and praised after his death. This is what Willy wanted to be respected and well-known as a true travelling salesman. This also foreshadows Willy’s ‘death of a salesman’

Q

“D, y g h M’s s.”

A

“Dad, you gave her Mama’s stockings.”

Two-shot/closeup- the close-up shows exchange between Biff and Willy. The American Dream has come to the extent that Willy has compromised his morals to be well-liked and have attention. The stockings are symbolic of Willy’s betrayal and abandonment of his wife Linda. The American Dream shows that by adopting an idealistic attitude you compromise your morals and do activities such as cheating.

Q

“O y w k, b i a o w g a l p o i t c”

A

“Oh you wait kid, before it’s all over we’ll get a little place out in the country”

Two shots- Mystified by the dreamy nature of the American Dream, he is not properly grounded in the possibility of rejection of Biff from Oliver, which is actually the case.

He believes that Biff will lead the Loman family to success, and give Willy the opportunity to live out in the country. As his current present is miserable
