Doctrine 5

A

We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

Q

What is the problem with sin from God’s vantage point?

A

His law says, sin must be punished
His Holy Nature, detests sin and can’t be in its presence
His love, tells us that he wants to forgive sinners and be restored to fellowship with them
There was a penalty to be paid, and a moral quality to be dealt with. we must be made right before God.

17
Q

what was humanities problem with sin?

A

Sin causes us to be estranged from God and also keeps us in bondage

18
Q

Adequacy of God’s solution?

A
  • It is for all people (I John 2:2)
  • It is for all time (Hebrews 9:26-28)
  • It is for all sin (Titus 2:13, 14)
19
Q

God’s provision?

A

God’s Supreme Work!
It was conceived in infinite wisdom
Motivated by infinite love
Invested with infinite power

20
Q

Describe Jesus suffering through his Passion?

A

It was more than physical beatings,
it was emotional- as the bible describes in luke 22, when Jesus is in the garden and praying to God
it was social-rejections and mocking from the crown in luke 23
it was spiritual- separation from God - Matthew 27:46 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

21
Q

What is “universal salvation”

A
  • It is God’s will that all should be saved. (1 Tim. 2:4)
  • Nothing is beyond the scope of Christ’s redeeming work (Rom. 5:18)
  • Salvation is offered freely and equally to all, but is conditional upon an active faith (John 3:16)
  • Jesus Christ is the only Savior for all (2 Cor. 5:15)
22
Q

Limitless/Limited

A

We believe that atonement is limitless because Jesus came and died for the whole world, and we believe that we accept his gift out of our own volition. It is intiated by God but with cooperation to accept. Calvinism believes that atonement is limited because salvation is only for certain people who were chosen, this can lead to problem if you don’t believe that everyone has the opportunity to accept Salvation.

23
Q

Explains Christians responsibility in relation to doctrine 6:

A

•We have the ability to respond to the atonement that Christ made for us. As a believer, we have the responsibility to believe with our hearts that Christ died for us. We have the responsibility to profess our faith and call on the name of the Lord to confess our sins. As leaders we have the responsibility to preach it, tell it and announce it.

24
Q

impelling/compelling grace vs irresistible

A

Calvinism believes that the grace that God extends to human beings to effect their election cannot be refused, since it has been decreed by God.
WE believe that God’s grace is impelling/compelling (we have the choice to refuse his gift of salvation because of our free will) but that often God’s grace is so amazing we have an inward urgency to accept-(impelling)
