Dopamine Hypotheses Of SZ Flashcards
What is the initial dopamine hypothesis
Those with SZ produce more dopamine than normal brains this is supposed to be responsible for the symptoms of the didorder
What evidence is there to support to why dopamine could be the cause to SZ?
Falkai - after doing autopsies on those with SZ fount that they had more dopamine receptors than normal
What are the two pathways relevant to SZ
Positive symptoms caused by the overactivity of the mesolimbic pathway - VTA - NA — causes hallucinations/delusions
negative symptoms caused by the under activity of the mesocortical pathway VTA - Frontal lobe — loss of touch with reality
What’s a method of modifying SZ
Anti psychotics which target the dopamine receptors in the brain which can help to reduce activity of dopamine.
