Q

What does heroin do?

A

when opioids bind to opiate-specific receptors, they decrease body’s perception of pain and elevate mood by increasing levels of dopamine

Q

Why does nicotine have an effect on the brain?

A

Shaped similarly to acetylcholine so fits and acts like one which changes balance in the brain to think there is too much acetylcholine so reduces the number of receptors and releases less into the synapse

Q

What does alcohol do?

A

suppresses release of glutamate, resulting in a slowdown along brain’s highways
increases effects of GABA, resulting in sedation

Q

How does cocaine block the reuptake of neurotransmitters?

A

Binds to transporters that remove excess of neurotransmitters from the synaptic gap to prevent them from being reabsorbed the neurons that released them so increases their concentration in synapses.
Group of neurons produce more dependency, feelings of confidence, and energy in cocaine takers.
