earth Flashcards
What are the 4 spheres?
Biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and lithosphere.
What is the lithosphere?
The surface and outer part of the earth including the crust and upper mantle.
What causes the tectonic plates to move?
The convection current of the magma in the Earth’s interior.
What is subduction?
The process of one plate sliding under another.
What is seafloor spreading and what causes it?
Seafloor spreading is the process of new oceanic crust forming due to magma seeping through the gaps of divergent plate boundaries which are moving away from the mid-ocean ridges.
What instruments are used to measure tectonic plate activity?
Seismometer and seismograph.
How are volcanos formed?
When magma seeps through a divergent plate separating or convergent plates subduct which causes magma to fill when the plate goes under the other.
How are mountains formed?
The colliding plates crumpling and folding will over time create mountain ranges.
How do earthquakes occur?
Earthquakes occur when two plates subduct or collide and as the plates rub pressure builds until it is released in the form of an earthquake.
