Earth rotation and coriolis effect Flashcards
Coriolis effect
The deflection of an objects path due to the earths roatation
What causes air to move directly north or south
The atmospheric convection currents. The actual air currents are deflected to the east or west because our planet is rotating
Why is the earths speed of rotation much faster at the equator than near the poles
Because all locations on earth complete one revolution every 24 hours and because earth has a greater circumference near the poles
The earth moves slower where
At the poles
Why is rotation faster at the equator
A deflection of objects that are moving directly north or south
Easterlies
Polar winds come out of the northeast in the Northern Hemisphere and out of the southeast in the Southern Hemisphere
Rain Shadow
A region with dry conditions found on the leeward side of the mountain range
When do rain shadows occur
When humid wind blowing inland from the ocean meet a mountain range
