Earth's layers Flashcards
What are the layers of the earth?
Crust, Mantle, Inner Core, Outer Core.
Which layer is the thinnest?
The Crust
Which layer is the thickest?
Mantle
What are the two kinds of solid crust?
Continental and Oceanic
Which type of crust is thinner and more dense?
Oceanic
What are the two layers of the mantle?
The upper layer is the solid lithosphere and syrupy asthenosphere combined. The lower layer is solid material.
What are the tectonic plates made out of?
The tectonic plates are made up of large sections of the
lithosphere
Where do convection currents happen?
Mantle
What is the outer core made of?
Iron and nickel.
What is the outer core responsible for?
Earth’s magnetic field
What does the inner core provide?
The heat energy that drives the convection currents.
What gives us information about earth’s layers?
Seismic waves and rock samples.
