EARTHQUAKES Flashcards
It is the vibration on the surface of Earth resulting from the sudden release of energy. The breaking of rocks beneath the surface as a result tectonic forces produces ____
EARTHQUAKES
This theory explains how energy is stored in rocks and released by earthquakes
ELASTIC REBOUND THEORY
It is a fracture on which one body of rock slides pass another. This happens when the stress acting on the fault exceeds the frictional forces on both sides of the fault.
FAULT
The place where rock ruptures and slips and the place where the
earthquake originates
FOCUS (HYPOCENTER)
The point at the surfare directly above the focus, it is where the earthquake occurs
EPICENTER
The energy released from the hypocenter
SEISMIC WAVES
Waves that travel within the interior of the Earth
BODY WAVES
Waves that travel along the Earth’s surface
SURFACE WAVES
Move back and fourth parallel to the direction of wave motion. it is a compressional wave
PRIMARY WAVES (P-WAVES)
Move back and forth perpendicular the the direction of wave motion. they are also referred to as shear waves
SECONDARY WAVES (S-WAVES)
Surface waves that cause the ground to ripple up and down
RAYLEIGH WAVES
Move back and forth in a snake like movement
LOVE WAVES
The instrument that detects and records the ground motion from an earthquake
SEISMOGRAPH
Records the time of arrival and amplitude of the seismic waves
SEISMOGRAM
The number that indicates the relative size of energy released in an earthquake
MAGNITUDE
