Earthquakes/Volcanoes Flashcards
A break in a body of rock along which one block sides relative to another.
Fault
Area in the basin of the Pacific where many earthquakes and volcanic activity occurs.
Ring of Fire
Fracture where the blocks have moved horizontally.
Transform/Strike-slip
Tectonic plates move away from each other.
Divergent
Tectonic plates colliding.
Convergent
A seismic wave that causes particles of rock to move in a back-and-forth direction.
P-Wave
A seismic wave that causes particles of rock to move in a side-to-side direction.
S-Wave
The point on Earth’s surface directly above an earthquake’s starting point or focus.
Epicenter
The point along a fault at which the first motion of an earthquake occurs.
Focus
Scale that defines the magnitude of earthquakes.
Richter Scale
A violent volcano eruption.
Explosive volcano
Volcano eruptions that the lava flows calmly and doesn’t explode.
Nonexplosive volcano
A volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung.
Krakatoa
Hot spot of magma in the Rocky Mountains that could possibly erupt and cover much of the U.S.
Yellowstone Supervolcano
Continental transform fault located in California.
San Andreas Fault
