EBP 3- barriers to EBP WK 4 Flashcards

1
Q

Give some examples of issues relevant to EBP

A

-EBP push was strong in early 2000 (not recent)–>clinicians did not have good understanding of what EBP was (would fall back on weaker evidence forms)
-treatment efficacy in SP needs more research
-Disparity (unequal) between evidence-based interventions and clinical practice

Q

What is RCT? What are it’s limitations?

A

-Participants randomised to groups -control, treatment A, treatment B, etc
-Participants, clinicians, researchers may be ‘blinded’

-May be unethical when used for SP (i.e. Children being withheld from therapy as a controlled variable/no manipulation)
-Hard to make clinicians /researchers blind (i.e. Can’t create a placebo)

Q

Provide examples of SP areas with highest level of evidence

A

-Fluency (early stuttering)
-Voice: the Lee Silverman procedure
-Many areas of speech pathology now have published systematic reviews

Q

What are some reasons that evidence cannot be found/exist

A

-Funding into research area lacking
-Publication bias
-Non-significant results not published.
-Reduced clinical applicability
-Rare condition

Q

Provide some barriers to EBP in clinical world

A

-scarce external research evidence (low incidence conditions)
-poor quality external research evidence
-High caseload
.Lack of time to read literature
.Insufficient time to implement new ideas
-Lack of resources and or skills
