Ecology Flashcards
ecology
he branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
Abiotic
physical rather than biological; not derived from living organisms.
Biotic
of, relating to, or resulting from living things
Organism
an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
Population
all the inhabitants of a particular town, area
Community
a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Biome
a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat
Biosphere
the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth
Producer
a person, company, or country that makes, grows, or supplies goods
Primary Consumer
primary consumer is the living organism that eats the producers
Secondary Consumer
Secondary consumers eat primary consumers. They are carnivores (meat-eaters) and omnivores (animals that eat both animals and plants).
Teritary Consumer
a carnivore at the topmost level in a food chain
Energy pyramid
he fixed amount of energy that a system described by quantum mechanics, such as a molecule, atom, electron, or nucleus, can have.
Trophic level
each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain and the same nutritional relationship to the primary sources of energy.
