Q

What are the six modes of EGPWS

A
  1. Excessive Descent Rate.
  2. Excessive Closure To Terrain.
  3. Altitude Loss After Take-off.
  4. Unsafe Terrain Clearance.
  5. Excessive Deviation Below Glideslope.

Q

Explain EGPWS Mode 1

A

Excessive descent rate.
When within 2450 FT on the RAD ALT, excessive rates of descent will cause a “SINKRATE SINKRATE” caution, and a “PULL UP!” warning.

Q

Explain EGPWS Mode 2

A

Excessive terrain closure rate.
Rapidly rising terrain ahead of the aircraft causes an initial “TERRAIN TERRAIN” caution, then a “PULL UP!” warning

Q

Explain EGPWS Mode 3

A

Altitude loss after takeoff.
Significant altitude loss after takeoff with the flaps and gear not in the takeoff configuration will cause a “DON’T SINK” caution when within 245 ft of the ground

Q

Explain EGPWS Mode 4

A

Unsafe terrain clearance.
This mode provides alerts for situations when the terrain is not rising rapidly or the aircraft is not descending excessively. Depending on aircraft configuration and altitude, mode 4 will give warnings for “TOO LOW TERRAIN” then “TOO LOW GEAR”
Or
“TOO LOW TERRAIN” and “TOO LOW FLAP”
Also provides a “TOO LOW TERRAIN” alert after takeoff if closure with terrain is detected. Similar to Mode 3, except doesn’t require a descent after takeoff to trigger it.

Q

Explain EGPWS Mode 5

A

Excessive deviation below glideslope.
<1000 Ft AGL and 1.3 dots below glideslope = soft “Glideslope” alert.
<300 ft AGL and 2 dots below Glideslope = hard “GLIDESLOPE” alert.
