Elbow pain Flashcards
Lateral epicondylitis : Definition
- Lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a condition characterized by pain and inflammation of the lateral (outer) epicondyle of the humerus,
- Lateral epicondyle : is a bony prominence on the outer side of the elbow
*
Lateral epicondylitis : CAUSE
Mainly affects : Extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle, one of the forearm muscles responsible for extending the wrist.
- Repetitive gripping or wrist extension activities
Lateral Epicondylitis : Clinical features
- Pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle
- Elbow extended - pain on wrist extention
- Elbow extended - pain on supination of forearm
- Pain on forceful grip/graspine } includes actions like shaking hands, holding a racket
Medial epicondylitis : Definition
Medial epicondylitis , commonly known as golfer’s elbow, is a condition characterized by pain and inflammation of the medial (inner) epicondyle of the humerus,
Medial epicondylitis : Causes
- Activities that involve repetitive flexion of the wrist : such as typing, using a computer mouse, or playing musical instruments
Medial epicondylitis : Clinical features
- Pain and tenderness over medial epicondyle
- Pain on ; Wrist flexion and Pronation of forearm
- Assoc Ulnar nerve involvement : numbness / tingling in the 4th and 5th finger
* Ulnar nerve travels along the medial epicondyle of the humerus
Olecranon bursitis : Definition
- Refers to inflammation and swelling of the bursa over the elbow.
2 . This causes thickening of the synovial membrane and increased fluid production, causing swelling.
3 . The olecranon is the bony lump at the elbow, which is part of the ulna bone
Olecranon bursitis : Cause
This inflammation can be caused by a number of things:
* Friction from repetitive movements or leaning on the elbow
* Trauma
* Inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis or gout)
* Infection – referred to as septic bursitis
Olecranon bursitis : Clinical presentation
- young/middle-aged man with an elbow that is
1. Swollen over posterior aspect
2. Warm/ tender
3. Fluid filled and fluctuant
