Electric fields Flashcards
What is coulombs law?
The force between two point charge is equal to
F = Q1Q2/4piε0r^2
(If charge is the same sign, it is repulsive)
What is uniform field strength?
E = F/Q
What is potential gradient
The change of potential per metre at a point in the field
What happens when a charged particle enters a field
1)directly
2) in parallel
1) it will change direction
2) it continues moving in the same direction
What is the direction of field lines from a positive source?
Coming forward from the charged object.
What is field strength in relation to potential
The derivative of potential, with respect to r
What is force in relation to field strength?
field strength* charge
What is force in relation to potential energy
The derivative of potential energy
What is potential energy in relation to potential
potential* charge
What is absolute potential energy?
the potential difference between a point, and a point at zero potential, which is infinitely far away
What is potential difference?
The work done, against an electric field, in moving unit charge from one point to a second point at a higher potential. If a charge moves from a point of higher potential to lower potential, work is done by an electric field.
How do potential gradient, and field strength change, around a radial field of a sphere?
They are both greater near the surface, than they are, further away
Is work done, in moving a charged particle along equipotential surface, and why?
No, because work done = the work done on a charge is the change in potential, multiplied by the charge.
