Electricity and Magnetism Flashcards
– The study of stationary electric charges.
Electrostatics
– The study of electric charges in motion.
Electrodynamics
► Electrification can be created by ____
contact, friction, or induction.
It is due to the movement of negative electric charge.
Electrification
The smallest unit of electric charge is the _____.
electron
The fundamental unit of electric charge is _____.
coulomb (C)
► Have neutrons, protons, and electrons. ► Protons are positively charged
► Electrons are negatively charged
Atoms
► Are located on the outer edges of atoms…they can be moved.
Electrons
► The build up of an electric charge on the surface of an object.
Static Electricity
► Occurs when there is a loss of static electricity due to three possible things:
► Friction - rubbing
► Conduction – direct contact
► Induction – through an electrical field (not direct contact)
Static Discharge
Electricity that moves…
Kinetic energy
2 types of currents
Direct Current
Alternating Current
•Where electrons flow in the same direction in a wire.
Direct Current (DC)
► electrons flow in different directions in a wire
Alternating Current (AC)
•The components are lined up along one
path. If the circuit is broken, all components turn off.
Series Circuit
– there are several branching paths to the components. If the circuit is broken at any one branch, only the components on that branch will turn off.
Parallel Circuit
– material through which electric current flows easily.
Conductors
