Electrochemistry Flashcards
What is the function of the salt bridge in a voltaic cell?
The salt bridge completes the electrical circuit and prevents the accumulation of positive or negative charge in the half cell.
What feature of an oxidation-reduction reaction allows it to be used to generate an electric current ?
The transfer of electrons between atoms
What information do you need in order to determine the standard voltage of a voltaic cell?
Standard reduction potentials for each half-reaction
In. Voltaic cell represented by Al | Al3+ || Cu 2+ | Cu , what us oxidized and what is reduced ?
Al is oxidized because it is lower on the chart and Cu is reduced because it is higher up in the chart
What is electrochemistry?
The study of how chemicals can be used to generate electric energy.
What is a voltaic cell?
Device invented by Alessandro Volta which uses a spontaneous redox reaction to create electrical energy .
Define reduction potential:
Tendency of a substance to gain electrons
How does a voltaic cell work?
2 pieces of metal called electrodes are submerged in salt solutions when the electrodes are connected, one will become oxidized and one will become reduced. The electrons transfer from the oxidized(anode) to the reduced electrode (cathode)
What are 4 main cell types?
- lead acid
- nickel cadmium
- zinc Cardin
- lithium
What are the geneRal usages for a lead -acid ?
- used in cars and automotive products
- contain about 6 six cells that generate 2V for a total out out of 12V
What are the general usages for a nickel cadmium battery?
- storage batteries that power things such as cordless drills
- a secondary battery (secondary cells)
- rechargeable
What are the general usages for a zinc carbon cell?
- primary battery (primary cell)
- provide electric energy
- non rechargeable
- deliver current until the reactants are gone
- consumer
- most commonly used cell
What are the main usages for lithium batteries?
- reliable for many applications
- provides a significant amount of power
- light weight batteries that store a large amount of batteries
- new technology
- often used in computers and watches to main tain time and date settings
How do you calculate the cell voltage?
E0 reduction - E0 oxidation
