Electrolysis Flashcards
What is losing electrons called?
Oxidisation
What is gaining electrons called?
Reduction
What happens when 2 ions go to the same electrode?
The least reactive is discharged.
Why is carbon dioxide given off at the positive electrode during the extraction of aluminium?
Because the oxygen given off reacts with the hot, positive carbon electrodes, making carbon dioxide gas, this is why the carbon cells need to be replaced regularly.
Why is cryolite used in the extraction of aluminum?
Because aluminum has a very high melting point and using this cryolite reduces it’s melting point and therefor energy costs.
What are the 3 products produced when we electrolyze brine?
Chlorine gas at the positive electrode, hydrogen at the negative electrode and sodium hydroxide solution.
What are uses for chlorine?
Bleach
What are uses for hydrogen?
Can be used in the process of making margarine
What are the uses for sodium hydroxide?
Can be used for soap and bleach
