Q

Why is carbon dioxide given off at the positive electrode during the extraction of aluminium?

A

Because the oxygen given off reacts with the hot, positive carbon electrodes, making carbon dioxide gas, this is why the carbon cells need to be replaced regularly.

Q

Why is cryolite used in the extraction of aluminum?

A

Because aluminum has a very high melting point and using this cryolite reduces it’s melting point and therefor energy costs.
