Flashcards in Electromagnetic Spectrum Deck (25):
1

What are the sources for radiowaves?

Radios and the sun

2

What is the effect on the body if exposed to radio waves?

No effect

3

How do radio waves work and a main use of radiowaves?

A main use could be for radios. They work by sending radio waves to and from the targets

4

What are the sources for microwaves?

Phones and the sun

5

What do microwaves do to the body?

Nothing

6

What is one main use of microwaves and how do they work?

A main use could be for mobile phones, to do this, the communications have to send a microwave signal to the mobile phones

7

What are the sources for infrared radiation?

An oven and the sun

8

What effect does infrared radiation have on the body?

It can cause burns

9

What is the main use for infrared radiation?

To use infrared cameras or to cook food

10

What are the sources for visible light?

The sun and metals

11

What effect can visible light have on our bodies?

It can cause blindness

12

What is the main use for visible light?

To look at things

13

What are the sources for ultraviolet?

Sun tan beds, UV lamps

14

What are the effects on the body when using ultraviolet?

It damages cells

15

What is the main use for ultraviolet?

For fluorescent lamps

16

What are the sources for X-rays?

The sun and an x ray machine

17

What are the effects on the body for X-ray?

It causes radiation damage

18

What is one use for X-rays?

To view the internal structure of items

19

What are the sources for gamma rays?

Anything radioactive and the sun

20

What do gamma rays do to the body?

They kill every cell in the human body

21

What is a main use for gamma rays?

Sterilising food and medical equipment

22

How do X-rays work?

When electrons hit a metal plate and their kinetic energy is transferred into x-rays

23

How do x-rays produce images?

As an x ray can scan white parts of an image greatly and the black parts terribly, the image is able to be reflected back into an x ray machine in which the image is scanned, then produced.

24

What are the advantages of x rays?

.You can view the internal structure of the body

.x-rays are non-invasive- you don't need to cut up someone's body to see what's wrong with them

25

What are the disadvantages of x-rays?

.They can cause cancer

.They can cause cell damage

.They cannot view soft tissue, such as the internal organs
