Elements, compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What are atoms and subatomic particles
Atoms: the smallest building block of all matter
Protons: Protons are the positively charged particles which are present in the nucleus of an atom
Electrons: The electron is a negatively charged particle that spins around the outside of the nucleus.
Neutrons: Neutrons are the particles in an atom that have a neutral charge.
Elements
What are elements
A substance made up of only one type of atom
What are compounds
a substance containing atoms of two or more elements joined together by chemical bonds
What is a mixture
A mixture is a material composed of two or more simpler substances in chemistry.
What is the difference between an element, compound and mixture
Element is the simplest substance that cannot be broken down by any chemical methods. Compound is made of two or more elements chemically combined together. Mixture is made from two or more substances physically combined together.
Examples of elements, compounds and mixtures
Elements : gold
Compounds: water
Mixtures: salt and sand
What is Atomic mass and Atomic number
Proton Mass: 1 Charge: +1
Neutron Mass:1 Charge: 0
Electron Mass: almost 0 Charge: -1
Atomic Mass = protons + neutrons
Atomic Number = Protons
Finding things on the periodic table
Atomic Mass = bigger number
Atomic number = smaller number
Protons: smallest number
Neutrons: atomic mass - atomic number
Electrons: same as protons
