ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES Flashcards
A susbtance that cannot be broken down into another substances.
Ex: Iron, Aluminum, Oxygen, and Hydrogen
ELEMENTS
Contain two or more atoms that are chemically combined, that is the elements have undergone a chemical reaction.
COMPOUND
Can be defined as something that has variable composition. a compound made up of two or more chemical components that are not chemically linked.
MIXTURE
2 TYPES OF MIXTURE?
Homogenous and Heterogenous Mixture
A mixture in which the components are uniform in the whole solution, its composition is the same throughout and it appears like a single substance,
HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE
a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture.
HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE
-It have uniform and definite composition.
-Will always have the same composition.
-Are either elements or compounds.
PURE SUBSTANCES
6 Separation Techniques of Mixtures?
Decantation, Sieving, Magnetic Separation, Filtration, Evaporation, Distillation.
Involves separating a dense, insoluble substance from heterogenous mixture.
Decantation
involves separating mixture based on different sizes of components.
SIEVING
Is a special form of sieving that separates very fine solid particles from liquid or gas mixture.
FILTRATION
Used for separating materials, such as irons, from non-magnetic mateials.
MAGNETIC SEPARATION
is used for recovering solids from solution.
EVAPORATION
