Endocarditis & Iron Deficiency Anemia Flashcards
What is Endocarditis?
Inflammation of the endocardium (inner lining of the heart) from a pathogen that has damaged endocarditis tissue.
What is infective endocarditis?
An infection of the heart chambers or valves.
What causes signs and symptoms of endocarditis to develop?
- Toxic effects of the infection
- Destruction of the heart valves
- Embolization of fragments of vegetative growths on the endocardium
What are the types of inflammatory diseases of the heart?
- Infective Endocarditis
- Rheumatic Endocarditis
- Myocarditis (myocardium)
- Pericarditis (pericardium)
Name the two classifications of Infective Endocarditis:
- Acute: Infective Endocarditis
- Subacute: Infective Endocarditis
What causes “Acute-Infective Endocarditis?”
A new infection
What ORGANISM normally causes acute Infective Endocarditis?
Staphylococci
What causes “subacute:Infective Endocarditis?”
A defective heart valve
What ORGANISMS normally cause “subacute:Infective Endocarditis?”
- Streptococci
- E.coli
How does Infective Endocarditis occur?
- Microbial infection of the endocardium
- Deformity or injury of the endocardium
- Results in colt formation on the endocardium
- Infective organisms invade the clot & form lesions
- Vegetation’s (lesions) form & can become thromboemboli
What Infective organisms can cause Infective Endocarditis?
- Staphylococci, Enterococci or Pneumococci, Streptococci
- E. Coli
- Rickettsia
- Fungi-Candida, Aspergillus
- Chlamydiae (chlamydia)
How does Infective Endocarditis occur?
Infection may erode through the endocardium to underlying structures
What can cause the progression of Infective Endocarditis?
- Tears in the endocardium
- Deformities of valve leaflets
- Dehiscence of prosthetic valves
- Deformity of the chordae tendineae
- Abscesses
