Energy from the nucleus Flashcards

1
Q

What is nuclear fission

A

The splitting of an atomic nucleus, usually uranium and plutonium. For it to happen a neutron must be absorbed, then 3 neutrons are emitted which fire into the nucleus of another uranium or plutonium, in a chain reaction

Q

What is nuclear fusion

A

Forcing 2 nuclei together to form one large nucleus, releasing energy as stars. Due to both being positive the repel is so strong they have to be heating to extreme temperatures and surrounded by a magnetic field in order to fuse.

Q

How was the universe formed

A

The big bang. Nuclei started to form of the simplest of elements. Hydrogen and helium were the early gases. The gravitational attraction by the dust and gas got gravitated towards each other to form stars and the universe.
