Energy production and management Flashcards
What has caused the recent change in energy demand?
Global energy demand has rapidly increased
Population growth and development are the two main causes of this increase in energy demand
What specifics have increased the energy demand ?
- The higer demand for food leads to more intensive farming
- Urbanisation increases development which uses energy for heating and lighting and domestic appliances
- Increased wealth means more people have the money to spend on applinaces and technology
What is the worlds main energy source?
Fossil fules at 84%
Renewables are increasing but ony 11% and nuclear at 4%
which counries are the biggest producers of energy resources?
- USA
- Canada
- Norway
- Russia
- Australia
- Middle east
What is an energy gap?
An energy gap is when a country cannot meet the demand for energy using its own resources
Having an energy gap means that a country is not secure
What does a country need to be to be energy secure?
- An uninterupted supply of energy
- Affordable enrgy supplies
- Accessible supplies
Why does the UK have a widening energy gap?
- Renewable energy is not as efficient so cannot keep up with phasing out of fossil fules
- It is cheaper to import fossil fules than use the UK’s resources
What can affect energy security?
- Energy sources running out
- War/conflict
- Natural hazards
- Political disputes
What are examples of non-renewable energy sources?
- Gas
- Oil
- Coal
- Nuclear
What are exaples of renewable energy sources?
- Hydroelectric
- Wave/tidal
- Wind
- Solar
- Geothermal
- Biomass/waste
What will happen as supplies start to run out?
At some point non-renewable sources will run out so have to be used carefully
- Economic devleopment will become harder
- Countries with energy supplies become more powerfull
- Contries with an energy gap have to pay more for energy
What are some induvidual changes people can make to save energy?
- Reduce personal car use
- Insulating houses
- Buying energy efficeient appliances
- install double glazing
- install solar panels
What are some national changes people can make to save energy?
- Investment in renewable energy
- Encouraging electric cars
- Investment in public transport
- Providing grants for insulation or solar panels
- Tightening building regulations on the energy efficiency of homes
