Energy Reasources Flashcards
1
Q
what do we use energy for
A
transport, electricity generation and heating
2
Q
what are the main energy resources available for use on earth
A
- non-renweable: fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) and nucluar fuel
- renewables: bio-fuel, wind, hydroelectricity, geothermal, the tides, sun and water waves
3
Q
define non-renewable energy source
A
the energy sources will eventually run out and we have limited supply of them
4
Q
define renewable energy source
A
the energy sources will not run out and it can be renewed as it is used
5
Q
why are some energy sources more reliable than others
A
- non-renweable resources can be used at any time
- some renewable resources such as solar power are dependent on how sunny it is
- Hydroelectricity cannot work is reservoirs are dry
- tidal cannot work all the time becuase it is dependant on if the tide is low or high
- wind and waves will be too weak on calm days
6
Q
why does energy demand vary
A
at certain times of the day more or less energy is required so higher or lower rates of energy generation are required
7
Q
how does a power station generate energy
A
a fuel is used to heat water producing steam, the steam turns a turbine which drives a generator
