Indications for Tonsillectomy

A
  • 5+ tonsillitis (not just URTI) yearly for > 1 year
  • episodes disabling and preventing normal function

OR

  • recurrent febrile convulsions
  • obstructive sleep apnoea
  • stridor, dysphagia
  • quinsy not responding to treatment

  • otitis media
  • quinsy (peritonsillar abscess)
  • strep sequelae: rheumatic fever, post-strep GN

First 24h:

  • haemorrhage (2 - 3%)
  • pain

First 10 days:

  • haemorrhage (secondary to infection)
  • pain
