Q

What information should you know about using sealing putty?

A
  • Fire gloves to be worn
  • Remove the plastic bag from putty screw top
  • opened plastic bag by tearing along pre torn seal across its full width
  • Grasp the base of clear plastic tub and fold back the plastic bag over the tub and the hand, so that the bag becomes a sleeve.
  • Remove lid from the clear plastic tub.
  • The plastic tub should be crushed in one firm, deliberate motion against the source of the leak fixing the putty inside against this source.
  • Further tubs of putty can be applied having first gently removed the plastic crushed tub and plastic bag from the previous application.
  • If more than one tub is required, however, it may be that the leak is too large and an alternative containment method should be considered.
  • If crews are wearing GTS then fire gloves cannot be worn and the crew must consider the reduced hand protection when considering the application of the putty to a leak where jagged edges or hot surfaces exist that may damage the GTS gloves.
  • Once a seal has been achieved alternative methods of containment must be considered, as this is only a first-aid measure.
  • The putty will be ineffective at sealing leaks subject to internal pressures greater than about 0.25 bar (equivalent to approx. 2.5 m head of water).
  • Sealing putty must not be used on any form of pressurised gas cylinder
  • The sealing putty when subjected to heat may dry out and lose its ability to bond to the damaged surface. Conversely, very low temperatures (below -20°C) may affect its performance causing the putty to prematurely harden.
