Equilibrium Flashcards
State the definition of a dynamic equilibrium.
Equilibrium that exists in a closed system when:
- the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backward reaction.
- the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant
What is the reactant effect?
If reactants are added (or products removed), equilibrium shifts right in the forward direction.
What is the product effect?
If products are added (or reactants removed), equilibrium shifts left in the backward direction.
If equilibrium lies to the right, what does it mean?
There’s a greater concentration of products than reactants.
If equilibrium lies to the left, what does it mean?
There’s a greater concentration of reactants than products.
What happens if you add a catalyst?
- less activation energy needed
- acts of both forward and backward reaction
- doesn’t affect equilibrium
- only affects rate which reactants/products are produced
