Q

Difference between heterogenous and homogenous equilibrium

A

With homogenous equilibrium, all the equilibrium species are expressed in the Kc expression. With heterogenous equilibrium, only gaseous equilibrium species are expressed. This is because the concentrations of solids and liquids remains constant

Q

How to work out partial pressures of gases?

A

P(O2) = Mol of 02/Total mol x total pressure (Units for partial pressure Pa, kPa, atm

Q

Factors affecting Kc and Kp

A

The values of Kc and Kp are not affected by concentration, pressure or catalyst. Only by temperature. The effect depends on if the FORWARD reaction is exothermic or endothermic.

Q

What happens to the value of Kp /Kc if you increase temp when forward reaction is exothermic?

A
  1. Forward reaction exothermic
  2. Increasing temp shifts position of equilibrium to left
  3. Decreases equilibrium yield of products
  4. Kc/Kp value decreases

Q

What happens to the value of Kp /Kc if you increase temp when forward reaction is endothermic?

A
  1. Forward reaction is endothermic
  2. Increasing temp shifts position of equilibrium to right
  3. Increases yield of equilibrium products
  4. Kc/Kp value increases
