Estuaries And Intertidal Zone Flashcards
Are places where the freshwater and saltwater meet
Estuaries
Is salty but not as salty as the sea water
Brackish Water
The waters contain Nutrients such as
Plankton and bacteria
Decomposing plant matter called
Detritus
Is where the land and sea meet
Intertidal zone
Intertidal zone is also known as
Littoral Zone
This area is generally dry most of the time it is a submerged only during several storms and very high tides
Splash zone
This area is covered with water during high tide it is between the average high tide in average sea level
Upper intertidal zone
This zone is between the average sea level and average low tide level
Middle Intertidal zone
This zone is submerged in water and is only exposed during extremely low tide
Lower intertidal zone
Depending on the time of the day and also the intensity of the tides certain places may be dry or so in the salt water
Moisture
The strong waves can carry away poorly adapted organisms
Wave actions
Organisms must be able to adapt to the changing salinity during the tides
Salinity
The temperature ranges from the moderate temperature of the water to air temperature that is scorching
Temperature
There always predators such as birds and mammals that they prey on the animals living here
