Ethernet Basics Flashcards

1
Q

What does this mean ?
10Base5

A

10 - speed in megabits per second
Base - This value is either going to be Base or Broad.
Base means that the entire bandwidth is only one channel.
5 - the length of that cable, so if you saw a 5, that stood for 500 meters.

Q

What does this mean?
10BaseT

A

10 - 10 megabits per second
Base - entire bandwidth is only one channel.
T - uses unshielded twisted pair with a switch in the middle.

Q

In relation to the RJ45 standard, What standard is required for the straight-through cable,

A

the same standard on each side.
So, one side is 568B as well as the other side.

Q

What is the MAIN difference between a hub and a switch?

A hub puts all hosts in their own collision domain

A hub operates at Layer 1 and a switch operates at Layer 4

A hub uses ARP, and a switch doesn’t

A switch puts all hosts in their own collision domain

A

A switch puts all hosts in their own collision domain

16
Q

What is a uplink port ?

A

The uplink port will allow you to connect two switches together.
it’s known as a medium dependent interface crossover or MDI-X.

17
Q

What is a switching loop

A

A switching loop is is when you’re connecting switch one -> two -> three -> one that can thus bring the network down.
STP (Spanning tree protocal) can prevent these from happening

18
Q

What is the different between a Hub and Switch?

A

HUB sends frames to everyone that connected to that Hub but a Switches forward frames based on MAC addresses.

Switches create and use MAC address tables to map ports and host devices.

19
Q

What is the biggest downside of using a Hub

A

Now, so, let’s just say two computers are having a conversation and another two computers are having a conversation.

As that’s taking place, the throughput for each conversation is half of the total bandwidth and that’s only with two conversations going.

Imagine if I had 5, 6, 7, 8 conversations going all simultaneously. you will get big degradation of the overall throughput because you have lots of people talking.

20
Q

What is carrier sense multiple access collision detection.

A

AKA CSMA/CD

if these two computers start talking at the same time their frames can potentially have a collision.

The problem with a hub is that only one conversation can take place

21
Q
A
22
Q

True or False
HUB are compatible with the 100 Mb ethernet

A

False
Only switches are compatible with the 100 mb speeds

Hub have a max speed of 10 mb per second

23
Q

What is full duplex and half duplex

A

half duplex means that only one conversation can happen at the same time

Duplex means that two conversations can happen at the same time
