What are the 4 principles of medical ethics?
autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence
Define autonomy and give examples
the patient has independent thought to deny or accept treatment
ex) living will, vaccines, power of attorney
Define justice and give examples
health care and all basic treatments are fairly distributed
ex) organ donation requirements, EMTALA
Define beneficence and give examples
treatment is done with intent of doing good
ex) pain management, hospice, end of life care
Define non-maleficence and give examples
do no harm/harm is less than the benefit
ex) sponge counts, pain med regulation, correct body part
