Evidence for evolution Flashcards
List evidences (7)
Hierarchy, homology, ontogeny, vestigial structures, convergence, geographical distributions, intermediate forms.
- Hierarchial organisation of life
species develop over time, from simple to complex
closely related organisms fall into one group as opposed to organisms that evolved independently over time.
- Homology
Basic structure can be similar with different functions- modification in function from an existing structure with time, evidence of common ancestry
3.Ontogeny
Structures lost in adults which existed in the ancestral spp are retained in the embryos of recent ancestor
- Vestigial Structures
Retain structures that are no longer functional, but were in the ancestral condition
- Convergence
Unrelated organisms retain structures that are similar in function but very different in structure. Selective pressure can have similar result in diff spp
- Geographical Distributions
Animals of same type in the same area (marsupials)
Intermediate forms
Pelvic girdles and legs retained in primitive snake spp and get gradually smaller in more advanced snakes.
