Evolution Flashcards
What is evolution?
The change over time of populations in order to survive and reproduce
What is evolutionary fitness?
The ability to survive and reproduce
Who is Charles Darwin
The father of evolution, he found many beaks
Selective pressure
Environmental pressures that force an organism to adapt, for example the bunny with the colour changing fur
Why is pollution an example of artificial selection?
Because it is brought about by humans
Homologous structures?
Same origin, but different function
Analogous structure
Different origin, same function
Vestigial structure
A structure that from the past, but the organism no longer has a use for it, ex. Whales hip bone
Mutation
An accidental genetic change, that can get passed down through generations IF it is beneficial
Adaptation
Bunny changes fur colour to absorb more heat from the sun, it adapts to the environment
Speciation;
Sympatric- live in the same habitat, but become reproductively isolated
Allopatric- when a geographical barrier separates them
Pre-zygotic mechanisms
Behavioural Temporal Habitat Mechanical Gametic
Post-zygotic mechanisms
Zygotic mortality
Hybrid inviability
Hybrid sterility
What is hybrid breakdown?
Reproductive failure that results from the hybrids after f2 generation try mating with different species or subspecies
