Action: supports the scapula and shoulders, elevation (shrugging of shoulders), retraction, ration of scapulae. Adduct and slight elevation of the arm
trapezius (extrinsic)
Action: adduction, lowering, medial rotation, and extension of the arm. Raises the body toward the shoulders
latissimus dorsi (extrinsic)
Action: presses the scapula to the thoracic wall. involved in medial rotation and retraction of the scapula
rhomboid minor and major (extrinsic)
Action: elevates the scapula, rotates the inferior angle of the scapula medially, and rotates the glenoid of scapula downward
levator scapulae (extrinsic)
Action: elevates the ribs and involved in respiration
serratus posterior superior (extrinsic)
Action: depresses the ribs
serratus posterior inferior
Action: theses muscles rotate or extend the head and neck when both sides contract
splenius cervicis and wapitis (superficial intrinsic back muscles)
Action: keeps the body in an erect position
iliocostalis (lumborum, thoracic, crevices) - intermediate intrinsic back muscles, spinalis (thoracis, servicis, and capitis) - intermediate intrinsic muscles, longissimus (thoracis, capitis, crevicis) - intermediate intrinsic back muscles
Action: involved in extension of the head and vertebral column and rotation
semispinalis (thoracis, capitis, crevicis)
Action: stabilize the vertebrae and aid in rotation and extension of vertebrae
rotator (braves and longus)
Action: involved in stabilization of the vertebrae with the movement of the vertebral column
multifidus
Action: involved in movement of the vertebral column and assisting in respiration
interspinales, intertransversarii, and levatores costarium
Action: bilateral contractions turn the head backward, and the unilateral contractions turn the head to the sides
suboccipital region and triangle: rectus capitis, posterior major, obliquus capitis superior, obliquus capitis inferior
