M- militarism, countries were getting bigger militaries and drawing up war plans, and 99 years of general peace left nations ignorant to the effects of war. A-Alliances, a series of alliances were set up and that got people nervous. I-Imperialism, industrial revolution left countries with a higher need for resources, leading to the scramble for Africa and countries wanting to get more land. N- Nationalism, many citizens felt a strong sense of allegiance to there country causing the to want to fight for the honour of their country

two armies would dig miles of trenches into the ground with multiple lines, the armies would then fire artillery at each other and then go into no mans land only to be ripped apart by machine guns, this style of warfare led to long stalemates and bloody battles
