Exam 1 Definintions Flashcards
Depolarization
A reduction in the voltage across a muscle cell membrane from its normal resting membrane potential. Results in a action membrane potential (the contraction of a muscle )
Cardiac output
Volume of blood that is ejected out of the left ventricle over a unit of time
Chemotaxis
Process that attracts neutrophils to inflammatory chemicals at site of infection
Diapedesis
Process used by neutrophils to go from circulation into tissue spaces
Preload
A factor determining SV. It is the Volume of blood received from atrium
Afterload
A factor determining SV. It is the physical resistance by the artery the ventricle is ejecting blood into
Stroke volume (SV)
The volume of blood ejected from the left ventricle during systole. Also called systolic discharge
Heart rate
of times the ventricle beats in 1 min
Megakaryocyte
Large multinucleated cell that never leaves the bone marrow
