Exam 1 Review Flashcards
Explain the difference between PM 2.5 and PM 10 in terms of size and health effects
PM 2.5 is much smaller than PM 10, so it is easier for it to get into the lungs then the blood stream.
What are the conversion factors for:
1%= 1 atom of how money molecules?
How many molecules are in 1 PPM?
What is 1% in PPM?
1%= 1 atom/ 100 molecules
1 ppm = 1 molecule/ 10^6 molecules
1% = 1/ 1,000,000
When going from pph to ppm, what is the conversion?
PPM to PPH?
PPH to PPM- 1,000,000/100
PPM to PPH- 100/1,000,000
What percent of air is nitrogen, oxygen, and argon?
Nitrogen- 78% of the air
Oxygen- 21% of the air
Argon- .9% of the air
Why is carbon monoxide considered to be a air pollutant?
When breathed into lungs, carbon monoxide can be hazardous to human health
What are the health effects resulting from long-term exposure to carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide interferes with the ability of hemoglobin to carry oxygen throughout your body. Exposure to CO in high enough concentrations can cause a person to die due to lack of oxygen. Shorter-term exposure leads to dizziness or a headache.
What 10^? Is PPM?
What 10^? Is PPB?
PPM= 10^6
PPB= 10^9
Going from grams to moles….
Going from moles to atoms/molecules….
Grams —> moles = molar mass (atomic mass) # grams/ 1 mole
Moles —> atoms/molecules = Avogadro’s # (6.022 x 10^23)molecules / 1 mole
